What happens when one of the biggest motorsports events comes back to your country after more than a decade? Well, excitement rings in the air as everyone prepares for the show that is about to happen. The WRC Safari Rally 2021 was one of the most anticipated events in the motorsport calendar. After nearly 20 years of absence from the World Rally Championship (WRC), the Safari Rally returned in June 2021 with a renewed sense of excitement and enthusiasm. The rally took place in Kenya, on some of the most challenging and picturesque terrains in the world.

I was fortunate enough to witness the spectacle as the machines chewed up mud and fesh-fesh in the vast savannah lands. The spectators young and old came out in huge numbers to cheer as the cars roared by and what a spectacle it was! In this blog post, we will take a closer look at the WRC Safari Rally 2021, including the winner, the challenges, and the highlights of the event.

Safari Rally 2021: A Brief History

The Safari Rally has a long and storied history in the world of rally racing. The event first took place in Kenya in 1953, and it quickly became known as one of the most challenging rallies in the world. The Volkswagen Polo Vivo is here and it’s equipped with an amazing set of features to suit you and your crew. The Volkswagen Polo Vivo is more like a shrunken Golf that offers lots of space and technology when compared to its supermini rivals in its class.

Dt Dobie not too long ago launched its first Volkswagen Polo Vivo assembled here in Kenya. This was exciting news for the locals because it mean’t that a new car brand had been added to the list of cars being locally assembled. I got the opportunity to shoot the Polo Vivo at the Volkswagen showroom which helped me get a good look and feel of the car and what it is all about.

When you get behind the wheel of the Polo Vivo, you will quickly realise that it is actually a very comfortable car for its size, built with convenient features and a smart design. Without a doubt the interior feels best in class in terms of quality. The Polo Vivo is equipped with more digital features than any other small car in its category. The car comes fitted with a 340G radio SD, USB, Bluetooth, App-Connect with B-sting/2 speakers and 2 tweeters are optional on the Comfortline.

You can even control your music volume, select tracks, radio stations or answer phone calls without raising a finger with the standard multifunction steering wheel. All these features, as well as 4 speakers and 2 tweeters, come standard on the Highline, GT and Maxx Polo’s.

As for the Engine, it comes with a 1.6 Litre petrol engine coupled with a 6-speed MPI gearbox which produces 103 horsepower and 153 Newton meters of torque. For a small and light weight vehicle like the Polo Vivo, this can easily be translated as a perfect combination of power and economy. A quick note is that the 6-speed MPI gearbox is actually a Tiptronic automatic which makes driving on the highway or in the city more fun and enjoyable.

A car’s ground clearance is an important factor to look into when buying any car in Kenya and the Polo Vivo delivers in this aspect as well. The car gets a 15mm suspension raise above the ground so that you can drive with ease knowing that the car can easily manoeuvre through most Kenyan roads.

Its mid-morning, the sun is increasingly getting hot and the John Deere combines are working their way through the wheat farms ravaging through the tall wheat stalks. Dust rises and the aim is to harvest all the wheat in the farm and get the job done before noon as the sun tends to get unbearably hot on this side of the Sahara. Seeing this choreographed movement between man and machine as the harvesting went on left my friends and I in awe for the first couple of minutes.

The steps involved in the whole process looked pretty simple but the prowess required is of another level. The combines cut the crop and extract the wheat berries while disposing anything else that is not meaningful. At the side, a grain cart is being driven in between the two combines where it collects and unloads the berries onto the awaiting hopper trucks at the edge of the field that take the berries to a grain elevator.

For most people food is normally served on the table ready to eat and we hardly ever ask ourselves what process the food underwent in order for it to arrive at our tables. On average wheat requires 110 and 130 days between sowing and harvesting. This of course is dependent on the climate, seed type and soil conditions.

During harvest the combines separate the head which contains the kernel from the stem while at the same time separating kernels from the rest of the inedible plant material. (The Kernel is the seed from which the wheat grows) The kernel is also the part that humans and animals eat.

Most of the wheat used for food requires processing. In the milling process, the grain is cracked and then passed through a series of rollers. The smaller particles are sifted out and the bigger particles go through the roller process again for further reduction. On average 72 percent of the milled grain is recovered as white flour. The interesting bit about wheat is that, it is such a versatile crop that it is normally being harvested every month of the year in different parts if the world.

In Kenya, wheat is the second most important cereal grain crop after maize. It is grown mostly for commercial purposes and planting is normally done at the onset of rains. The Seed rate ranges from 75-125kg per hectare depending on the variety of seeds.

Key Details

The main growing areas for wheat in Kenya are: Nakuru, Narok,Trans Mara, Laikipia, Uasin Gishu, Nyandarua, Meru Central, Trans Nzoia and Keiyo. Wheat is typically milled into flour which is used to make a wide range of foods.

Alternative uses of wheat.

The properties that make wheat suitable in food products also make wheat functional in non-food industrial applications. Some alternative use include;
1. Straw Particle board (Wood) This is mostly used furniture and flooring.
2. Paper. Wheat starch is known for making paper stronger.
3. Adhesive commonly used on postage stamps.

Passion led me here…

When I started automotive photography, nobody warned me of the sweaty days that I would face ahead. Days where my passion for fasts cars would have me running around under hot sun and scorching tarmac. Days where the inhalation of burnt rubber and racing fuel would be more prevalent than the inhalation of fresh air.

These are the days that I sweat the most but again these are the days that remind me why I really love going out to photograph cars. At the end of the event there is no champagne popping for us photographers, just more edits to crunch up when we get home.

In 2019 I had the privilege of attending most if not all track days organized by Delta Motorsports Kenya. From the events it was clear that there is a fast-growing car culture in the country due to an increase in social media use that has aided in sharing our unique stories. The fan base seems to be growing at an equally fast pace which is really exciting for future prospects of motorsports in Kenya.

From across the nation fans and drivers came together. Cars of all kinds, piloted by individuals from different backgrounds, young and old, newbies and veterans, they all came with one goal in mind, to witness who will clock the fastest lap and speed.

Arriving at any track event is always exciting, especially for spectators and photographers. It’s like walking into a restaurant and you already know what is in the menu. Long straights, Fast corners and Colorful guardrails is what you’re about to get served. As for the drivers, they already know once they arrive, they have to put on a masterclass of skill on the track. All the work they have put into their cars and all their driving experience is judged on such days.

Quick Fact

Unlike standard car tyres, racing tyres that are used in top motorsport events are normally filled with nitrogen instead of compressed air. This helps in achieving more consistent tyre pressure on the wheels.

The reason why we love race days is because we get to see the battle at the front. The best drivers and teams throwing all their weight and resources to get a trophy and medal at the end of the day. For the newbies, it’s always exciting to see who’ll try and punch above their weight in terms of driving skill or even their car build.

For me the uncertainty is the reason why I love track events. You just don’t know what will happen on a race weekend. Of course we enjoy the moments when the top dogs battle it out for a win, but we watch for those moments when a lesser team driver can find themselves ahead of the curve too.

The Nairobi cityscape from above can easily be described as quiet, polite, and perhaps even a bit shy, but the multitude of people moving below the high-rise buildings are often the exact opposite. I once got the chance to photograph the city from different high-rise buildings with a couple of my friends and the experience is just pure bliss.

Up there we were alone but below us was a bee hive of activities as people traded and moved around. From where we were the movement seemed organised but we knew that down below lay people in a rush to get somewhere with the least of their concern being who was watching them from above.

Nairobi’s Central Business District is always a busy place. If you have been to the city centre then you definitely know all about the traffic, a snarling sprawl that is hectic and lawless as people rush to get to various destinations. For a first time visitor this is always confusing and one might wonder what’s there to love about this city? Well, the answer to this question is simple… The People.

Nairobi is all about the vibrant people dwelling in the city who are always full of energy. Whether you’re walking in the streets, seated in traffic, boarding a matatu or even enjoying a meal in a restaurant one thing that is always clear is the aura of energy evident in the people around, that never seems to fade away.

If you take a moment to sit back and watch how people interact you will be greatly amazed. Firm handshakes accompanied by the brightest of smiles are the order of the day here. Everyone seems to be excited to see each other, whether it’s a street vendor to driver, driver to driver, or even a matatu tout trying to entice the passengers to board his vehicle. The city is all about the people and their never-ending energy. If you have a minute to soak it all in then you’ll easily understand what makes Nairobi such an amazing city.

Nairobi is the only city in the world that has a national park within its boundaries. The park only 15min away from the CBD via car is home to animals such as lions, leopards, buffalos, among many others.

Years gone…

As the years fly by, the city is slowly morphing into a dense concrete jungle with a mix of urban architecture and some old colonial buildings. Nairobi Upper-Hill which stands on elevated ground can easily be seen right from the city centre dotted with modern skyscrapers built with beautiful architectural designs. Westlands also minutes away from the city centre is fast becoming the new hub for businesses with modern shopping malls and high-rise buildings cropping up ever so often in the area.

Key Details

Nairobi started as a colonial railway settlement that was once frequented by the pastoral Masai. In 1905 Nairobi became the capital of the British East Africa Protectorate and when Kenya gained independence in 1963, Nairobi remained the capital of the Nation.

The geographical environment within Nairobi, Kenya will keep changing in the foreseeable future and as time passes by, I hope I will be there to document the ever evolving Cityscape.

Ask anyone what they know about Nairobi Kenya and stories of wildlife and great marathon runners will definitely be part of their answer. It is well known that Nairobi is the only city with a protected National Park in it and Kenya always produces great athletes, but there is more to Nairobi and one of the hidden gems is the local car culture.

The car community in Kenya has seen rapid growth over the last couple of years. The tremendous growth in use of social media has played a pivotal role in telling and sharing the unique stories, photos and videos that stem form the car culture. This has in turn brought about publicity that was not there before. More people are now aware of the fast cars being driven around the city and it has led to many people wanting to be part of the car fraternity both as racers and fans. More motoring events have sprung up which is a delight to the car community. Car meets are now a norm and track racing events are happening ever so often.

Most people here dream of turbo cars and if you are keen enough, you’ll definitely spot a tuned JDM passing by. Subaru’s were for most part the people’s choice of car but recently more people are embracing German cars with Volkswagens, Audis and Mercedes’ steadily increasing in numbers the last couple of years. Once in a while you’ll spot an American, British or Australian race car but they quite rare.

Banter is never too far away when a group of car enthusiast meet and it is always a good time meeting likeminded people.

Despite the motorsports culture in Nairobi, Kenya growing at a steady pace, the number of cars would have been greater were it not for the outrageous taxes on new and used cars. Buying a car in Kenya is not so easy on the wallet for the average local leave alone the car enthusiast. The roads don’t help either with huge speed bumps being erected and becoming a norm on almost all our roads.

As far as the general population goes, some people still don’t understand what’s the point of having a fast car in Nairobi if you can’t fully utilize its speed? Well, the answer from the enthusiasts is always the same “it’s all for the culture and the fun of it.”

The beauty about the car culture in Nairobi is that it is so deep that the enthusiasts seem to know exactly how many cars of a certain make and model there are in the city. This is quite fascinating in all honesty. The best part about all this, as with any culture is the people. Without a doubt, It is in the car community here in Nairobi that I have found some of the most genuine, loving and amazing people.
